Mondays–V5E4–Technology Woes

We had a minor catastrophe in the house this last week. The Great Hunter’s YouTube stopped working on the television in his man cave. Anyone who has read my scruffy little blog knows that the Great Hunter is addicted to YouTube videos and watches them for hours. Although he has a recliner in his room, he sits in his desk chair with his feet up on the desk, and many times falls asleep. His feet slide and the chair dips and he wakes when he almost falls out of the chair.  The Great Hunter’s tech knowledge extends to using the remote so when something goes wrong, he looks to me to fix it. Not that I always can.

As I was vacuuming his floor, he told me he couldn’t get on Youtube. Disaster! He’s had to use his Roku with the television even though it is a “smart” TV because we’ve (meaning me) never been successful in getting that television to connect to the internet.  And now, the Roku wasn’t working either. Double Disaster!!

Although I have quite a bit more tech knowledge than he does, I’m in no way an expert. When I joined the Cybercrime unit twenty years ago, I didn’t know much about the internet. I could use specific programs well, but when it came to knowing the ins and outs of the computer, I was clueless. In the beginning, my Cybercrim boss used to tell me what he wanted me to do, I’d nod my head, take notes and then Google the words to find out what he was talking about. When he sent me to the first Cybercrime seminar, I was totally lost. The instructor was zipping along through the slides clicking and pointing and talking about such like “file paths”  and “URLs” and I had no clue what he was doing.

So when it came to trying to fix the Great Hunter’s Youtubeless, I went the the god of all knowledge,  Google, to try to find a fix for it. What I got was “Turn off the television, unplug the television, hold the on and off switch, replug it back in, turn the tv on and see if works”.  No, it doesn’t. Unplug the router (and of course, it’s in the basement), wait thirty seconds, plug it back in. That didn’t help either.

Now, because this Vizio television has never connected to the wireless internet (don’t know why) and the Roku wasn’t working for YouTube (again, don’t know why,) he was totally YouTubeless (and humorless). Not good.

Since what I tried with the Roku didn’t work, I thought I’d try to figure out why this television would not connect to the internet. Much to my surprise, after wandering around in the menu and trying different things, I got it to connect. Whoopee!

So at least now, even though he can’t access his beloved YouTube with his Roku device, he can with the smartness of the television itself. All is now right in the man cave world again.

And as an aside, I finally made it in to see my Electrophysiologist. His diagnosis was that I was in “atypical atrial flutter” and said he’d schedule a cardioversion for me next week and then follow up with a THIRD ablation later. So the friendly rapid fluttering bead my heart will be with me for at least another three or four days.
