Mondays–V5E22–Making the Most of Each Day

Turning seventy this year has really thrown me for a loop. There’s no way I mentally feel like an old person regardless of what the calendar says. I understand that “age is state of mind”, in my mind, I’m still 58 or maybe 62, definitely not almost sev……

Maybe you’ve seen those posts on Facebook that list what a child should do each summer day before they get electronic time; brush hair, brush teeth, make the bed, read a book for twenty minutes, go outdoors for half an hour, etc. I’ve mentally adapted that philosophy so each day I know I accomplish something and not waste a day.

My daily “To-Do” list is something like this: Fix something, clean something, make something, read something, move more and be thankful. I don’t do each one each day, but I try to do at least two or three.

This week, to repair something, I replaced the cabin air filter in my car, edged the sidewalk and painted the plastic kitchen ceiling light fixture base that had yellowed over the years.

I’ve begun reading “Eruption”, the new book by Michael Crichton and James Patterson. Both of these men are two of my favorite authors. I’ve loved Jurassic Park from since 1993 when the original movie came out. I would watch it with grandson (who’s 18 now) sitting on my lap.  I got him hooked on dinosaurs.

I’ve worked on (and completed) the crossbody Reporter Bag from Kandou Patterns.

For the Great Hunter’s birthday, I embroidered a shirt with his beloved Marine Corps logo. I personalized it with his initials and his dates of service. I was so proud of myself and I didn’t go by memory and actually looked at his DD14. Boy, it was a good thing that I did because I thought his dates of service were 64-68 (when I was just in elementary school –lol), but to my surprise, it read 64-67. When I gave him the shirt, he said it was really nice, but the dates were wrong. What? I told him I’d looked at his DD214 and pulled it out of the drawer and and “see, right here it says June 1967…promoted to Sergeant”. Arg. I read it wrong! I tried to pick out the embroidery, but it didn’t work. so I ordered a new one, in a smaller size (the other one swam on him). After embroidering for almost an hour, I realized the tail of the shirt was under the embroidery hoop. Hiss boo. Back to Amazon for another shirt.

I also designed and embroidered a luggage tag for my daughter and me to use on our vacation next month. One done and one to go.

I’ve moved a little more, getting in a few more steps this week, not my goal of 4,000 every day, but at least a couple of days. ‘I’ve had hip pain when walking for several years. I finally saw the doctor and requested some physical therapy. She diagnosed my problem as Piriformis Syndrome and authorized some physical therapy.

Each day when I get up, I mentally plan my day and think of each of those goals and how I can meet them. The last one, the most important one, is the easy one. I’m thankful everyday for all my blessings; my health, my “wealth”, my family and my friends.

  1. it sounds like you are approaching it all the right way, (and that darn shirt will not cooperate.) I just retired this week at 66 1/2 and I know exactly what you mean, I like your list of things to do on a regular basis.
