Mondays–V5E31c–Vacay Day 4, Aug 3–Farmers Market, Redwood National Forest, Big Tree

Vacay day 4 Saturday August 3, 2024 10,243 steps

We started this day at a farmers market down in the square in Arcata. I bought some honey and ghee( an unsalted butter that has had the milk solids removed by cooking unsalted butter and removing the butterfat) and a very overpriced beekeeper sign for my daughter-in-law. I couldn’t find a price on it, and didn’t ask, which is really out of character for me. I was stunned when the clerk rang it up at $42.  Although it was much more than I had wanted to spend, the cost of living here is at least a third more than what it is back in Missouri (gas here is over $5 a gallon and a small box of Cheez-Its is $8.69). I just kept my mouth shut but I fumed about for the next hour until, I realized the mistake was mine as there was a small price tag in the corner saying it was $39. Oh well. Live and learn.

Our next stop was the “Big Tree” at the Redwood State and National Forest about 30 miles away.  This tree is estimated to be 1500 years old, 23.7′ in diameter and 237′ tall. We hiked through the forest on a trail that was about three miles long, but we had never intended to go all three miles. (My hip after physical therapy and daily exercises is definitely better, but not three miles worth). After we’d walked about a mile, we realized that we’d missed our turn that would have taken us back to the beginning of the trail and we had to backtrack. Luckily,  we found the cut-off and came out on the road just down from our car.

On the drive back to Arcata, we stopped at a roadside beach. The view was beautiful.

We bought Mexican food to take back to the cabin with hot sauce so hot it literally burned my mouth when I just dipped my fingertip in to taste it. Needless to say that stuff came nowhere near my mouth again and went right into the trash. Dinner, a Netflix movie and then bed. We walked over 10,000 steps today. I’m hoping the amount of walking we’re doing will offset the complete crap I’ve been eating. Fingered crossed.
