Mondays–V5E31e–Vacay Day 5, Sunday, Aug. 4, Madaket Tour and Ferndale

3,890 steps

On Sunday, we took an hour and a half ” eco/wildlife cruise” of the Bay of Eureka, the second largest bay in California aboard the 1910 MV Madaket ferry.  The 90-minute narrated cruise takes you along the shores of the bay and Eureka’s waterfront. It was very cold out on the water and I layered up as best as I could with what I brought, a long sleeve thin Hoodie, a sweater and my lightweight blue Jean jacket. Knowing me and how I’m always cold I also brought along a small Afghan from the couch in the cabin. What a lifesaver that was. I was a little disappointed with the tour. The shoreline is industrial and some of it had seen its better days. The Wildlife didn’t cooperate well either. We only saw the heads of two seals, a couple jumping fish and several different species of birds.

After that, we drove (and I say “we” but there really isn’t any “we”  since my daughter’s been doing all the driving) to the small town of Ferndale, the hometown of Guy Fieri of Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. The well-preserved Main Street has several-blocks of quaint shops historic shops. The entire business district is on the National Register for Historic Places. “Cream City” which is Ferndale’s nickname is a cattle town and boasts more cows than people. Ferndale has been featured in movies like Outbreak and Majestic (neither of which I’ve seen) and the mini-series Salem’s Lot (that sounds vaguely family, but it was 1979, so I who knows) as well as an episode of Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives.

After we got back from Ferndale, we decided we just needed some downtime the rest of the day so dinner was in the cabin and then watching movies. We watched movies until I was doing the head bobbing on the couch and we decided it was time to go to bed. We’d walked much less today , less than 4000 steps, but my knee was definitely thanking me for that.
