Wow. The year is zooming by. The summer vacation is officially over for two of my grandchildren as they start school today and the oldest of my younger grandchildren heads off to college on Friday.
And speaking of the year zooming by, the Great Hunter and I went to Cracker Barrel for breakfast yesterday and there, front and center as you come through the door, was a fully decked-out Christmas tree.
Sigh. It’s not even Labor Day yet. But to be fair, they also had Halloween, Thanksgiving and some close-out Fourth of July items. I’m surprised they didn’t have any Valentine’s Day but that will probably come in October.
Right now, the Great Hunter and I are playing the waiting game. He’s waiting for the couple who bought the camper from him to come pick it up, and me, well I’m waiting for my very first zucchini to grow into full size,
and the tiny little, maybe, watermelon.
I’m not really sure it’s a melon, but it’s the closest thing I’ve gotten on the plant that looks like it might be a watermelon. I’ve never grown either one of these plants before, in fact, I’ve never eaten a zucchini except for in zucchini bread. But when I went to find plants earlier this spring, I decided to give them a try. What I found though was that zucchini plants (and maybe others too) have male and female flowers and all I had was male flowers. After doing some pruning of the male flowers, it seems to have worked and now I’m getting some female flowers too. Who ever would have thought I’d be excited about a zucchini plant.
And the Great Hunter and I are waiting for the vines to die on my favorite (not) cottonwood tree in the backyard.
The Great Hunter and I did manage to get out on the bike for our regular trip to Grafton.
It was a beautiful day and for being a warm and sunny Saturday afternoon, Grafton was not extremely crowded.
I was pleasantly surprised. We got to eat at our favorite place, the Grafton Winery and sit outside in the sunshine and watch the boats on the river.
It was a good day.
Update: After I wrote this, the Great Hunter along with my (our) son got the hydraulics hooked up on the camper and it appears to be working now, at least as far as they wanted to raise it on our steep driveway. Keep your fingers crossed. So, he’s not selling it for scrap, he’s waiting to tow it somewhere level to see if it’s really going to work.
