The Great Hunter and I have become fairly adept at putting together furniture. Generally, we are able to accomplish this without World War III starting. We had another go-around this last week, and again, world peace prevailed.
A couple of years ago, I replaced the 20-year-old Sauder-brand sideboard I’d paid about $100 for. It had just seen its better days. I looked for a long time to find one that would fit into the area I wanted and finally found one on Wayfair. We had a hell of a time putting this sideboard together and had to take it apart twice before we finally were able to finish it. Once finished, I knew I didn’t like it. I didn’t like the color, so I painted it. We were never able to get the top to fit correctly and it left a gap above the drawers. I just didn’t like it. We use this piece of furniture as a cat feeding station (so the dogs don’t eat the food before the cats get a chance), and since both my kitties are “big boned” (we’ll just go with that), there just wasn’t enough room for the two of them.
When we got our tax return (first time in years we didn’t have to pay Federal Income tax), I decided to replace that one and once I found a home for it (other than the Land of Misfit Furniture, a/k/a my basement), I found one on Wayfair that was the right size and ordered it.

It went together very easily, even though none of the parts were labeled. I painted it and put the semi-gloss topcoat on…but I’m not happy. I’ve never worked with raw wood before and it wasn’t until after I had painted it that I realized I should have sanded all the doors first. They are not smooth. I thought once I had the top coat on, it would make it smoother, but it isn’t smooth enough. Now, I’m in a quandary as to what to do. I ordered some rattan that I’ll paint and put on the doors. If I still don’t like that, I’ll have to bite the bullet, take the doors off, sand them down and start over. Unfortunately, there’s also a problem with the bottom trim bowing up causing the right-hand door to drag. Sigh.
I have an antique little doodad (I don’t know what it’s really called) that I removed from the large antique sideboard I refinished last year, that I’m hoping will help it look a little more “finished”. I wish I could have used that sideboard because I love it, but it is too large for the space.
I wish I wasn’t such a cheapskate.
