Mondays–V7E20–Retirement Day

Well, yesterday was the Great Hunter’s last day at work. He’s been looking forward to this day for the last month, counting down the days until he was finally free. I think at 81, it’s time. I’ve planned a surprise Retirement Party for him at a local restaurant and much to MY surprise, when he came home from his last day at work, he told me he may not be retiring after all. He said the store manager asked him if he would be willing to come back after a couple of weeks off and he told her he would think about it with the proviso that he get a $.50/hr raise and could keep his current work schedule.

To say that was a shock was an understatement. He has so many plans for the things he wants to do after he retires. He’s worried about the money, because all he’d have left was his Social Security, but I thought I’d assured him that we would be okay. We have more than we need. We’re not plush by any stretch of the imagination, but we are blessed. He’s never had a retirement plan or an IRA, mostly because he never worked full-time at a place that offered one. I got lucky that I was covered by a retirement plan for almost thirty year and now it gives me a monthly payment.

So it remains to be seen. Will he or won’t he retire? Stay tuned. Oh yeah, and the Retirement party is still on.

Update…the party went off without a hitch and he was completely surprised. And…all his co-workers and former co-workers told him NOT to go back to work. Stay tuned on that.
