This last week has been filled with a lot of nothing special but has been filled with a lot of…stuff. I’m not sure what exactly but I’ve done a lot of planning and preparation.
I’m hosting my book club this month, and as I did several years ago, I fret over the fact that my house is small (what HGTV would classify as a “starter home”) and how many women can I cram into my living room. I had the sofa and two recliners professionally cleaned for the first time and put a coat of hardwood floor rejuvenator on the floor. I have original hardwood floors from when my house was born in 1969 and although I’ve wanted for a long time to have the floors refinished, it’s never happened. Just the logistics of knowing I’d have to move everything out of the living room into the garage and wait three days is a little overwhelming. And the Great Hunter could care less. He spends all his time in his “man-cave” watching YouTube videos on building rustic cabins deep in the woods.
Then, of course, is the food planning. I think I’ve finally settled on Cherry Dump Cake, Chocolate Cheesecake, Chicken Taco Roll-ups, Whiskey Pretzels and Jalapeno Popper Dip. I think this gives a good balance of appetizers and desserts…I hope. And wine. I don’t know much about wine. I’m a sweet wine drinker and finally learned if I ordered a Moscato I would probably like it. But the other kinds of wine are pretty much still a mystery to me. I’ve bought a variety including a Chardonnay, White Zinfandel, a Rose and a semi-dry white. I think I need to get pinot grigio (or so I’m told.)
I’m also planning the Great Hunter’s and my 25th Anniversary Party, because if I didn’t plan it, we’d have dinner at El Maguey. I decided on a dinner and pool party. Laid-back enough for most people. I’m having it catered because I just didn’t want to deal with making that much food along with everything else. I want a traditional wedding type cake, and wow, are they expensive. After looking at quite a few cake toppers, I finally decided I wanted to use the cake topper from my mom and dad’s wedding cake 70 years ago. Since the topper is “vintage”, finding the plastic stand was a chore. So, lets see…we also have to have something to drink and to drink it in, plates and utensils and table cloths and probably other things I haven’t even thought of yet.
To top it all off, I’m getting a sinus infection and I felt like crap most of yesterday. But my thought was…I can’t get sick, I have too much to do between now and next Tuesday. Grandson to his baseball game today (who schedules a game for 1:00 p.m. on a weekday?), shopping for food for the book club, the Wentzville Blueline Family 5K race early, early Sunday morning (6:15!),
a patriotic concert Sunday afternoon, baking the cheesecake and then finally on Monday, putting the finishing touches on cleaning my house and the food and washing the wine glasses, etc.
So on Tuesday, don’t ask me to move. Oh wait. The Great Hunter wants to go to the theater on Tuesday to see the new Elvis movie (he’s a huge Elvis fan, I am not) and then to dinner, since it’s his night of the week to be responsible for dinner. He CAN plan things if it is something he wants.
Wednesday, don’t ask me to move. Ahhhh.
