Spring is my favorite time of the year. Everything starts greening up and the air is warmer and maybe, I can finally go without a coat or jacket. We’ve gotten enough rain this spring that the grass is growing really well. Over the winter, I’ve been “overseeding” the lawn and so far, it seems to have done the trick. Except for a few bare spots, my grass is really lush.

This is where my yard was three years ago.

I got my garden in this week and put in five tomato and four cucumber plants. Last year, I tried green beans and although they did fairly well, I hadn’t planted enough to be able to make a meal from one harvest. I really didn’t want to put my garden on the hillside again, but because my yard is so shaded, I’m limited on where I can get things to grow well.

I’ve got some more bare spots where I’ve not been able to get grass to grow for a long time, so this year I’ve fenced one of them off, planted grass seed, and I’m hoping for the best.

I’ve decided to take advantage of the sunflower seeds that have dropped beneath my bird feeders and have sprouted and see if I can grow a sunflower garden. Now, if I can just keep the rabbits from eating the little plants and the squirrels from stepping on them while they are foraging for dropped seeds, I may get my sunflowers. (Oh yeah, and I threw three potatoes out there that sprouted eyes before I got around to cooking them.)
